Your Role as a Patient Care Technician

As a Part-Time Patient Care Technician at UPMC Children’s Hospital, you will be an integral part of our healthcare team, directly impacting patient comfort and recovery. Your responsibilities will be diverse and rewarding, contributing to the smooth operation of our department and the high quality of care we provide. You will be expected to proactively identify areas for improvement and support positive changes within the unit, demonstrating your commitment to our patients and the team. Your core duties will encompass essential patient care tasks, including:

  • Assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, mobility, and personal hygiene.
  • Performing point-of-care testing, including blood glucose monitoring.
  • Monitoring and recording vital signs, weights, and fluid intake/output (I&O).
  • Applying and reapplying telemetry monitors.
  • Implementing Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) and Pressure Injury (PSI) prevention strategies, such as using TED hose and SCDs.
  • Performing simple dressing changes and assisting with restraint application and removal.
  • Conducting bladder scans and collecting various patient specimens.
  • Facilitating safe patient transport within the hospital.

Beyond these fundamental responsibilities, Patient Care Technicians at UPMC Children’s Hospital are encouraged to develop advanced skills, enhancing their expertise and career progression. Depending on departmental needs and your skill set, you may also be trained in:

  • Phlebotomy and venipuncture.
  • Peripheral IV removal.
  • Indwelling Foley catheter removal.
  • Basic arrhythmia recognition.
  • 12-lead EKG performance.
  • Nasogastric (NG) tube clamping and removal.

Under the guidance of Registered Nurses (RNs), you will provide direct patient care, assist with therapies, and report any changes in patient status. Providing patient and family education, within your scope of practice, is also an important aspect of this position. Strict adherence to hospital policies and procedures, including safety guidelines and patient confidentiality, is mandatory. Accurate and timely documentation in medical records is essential. We expect you to manage your workload effectively, complete assigned tasks efficiently, and contribute to departmental clerical duties as needed. Performing all duties in accordance with UPMC’s system-wide competencies and behaviors is expected, and you may be asked to undertake other duties as required.

Qualifications to Excel

To be considered for this Part-Time Patient Care Technician position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • One of the following experience and/or education combinations:
    • Two years of general healthcare experience and fulfillment of Patient Care Technician title requirements.
    • One year of relevant healthcare experience and current enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), or Physician Assistant (PA) program with at least one completed clinical rotation.
    • One year of relevant healthcare experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
    • For Nursing Students: Completion of at least one clinical rotation is preferred.
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a Patient Care Technician senior class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Basic computer skills are desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency validation are required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) that includes both didactic and skills demonstration components is required within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS certification is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Pennsylvania Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting Clearance with renewal.
  • Pennsylvania Act 33 Criminal Record Clearance with renewal.
  • Pennsylvania Act 34 Criminal Record Clearance with renewal.
  • Pennsylvania Act 73 FBI Criminal Background Clearance with renewal.
