A devastating fire has resulted in a total loss for the Wilbert’s Premium Auto Parts store located on Salt Road in Penfield, New York. The incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, prompted a large-scale response from local fire departments and has temporarily shut down a valued community business known for its extensive selection of auto parts.
At approximately 10:55 a.m., a driver passing by Wilbert’s Car Parts noticed significant smoke emanating from the building and promptly reported it. Upon arrival, firefighters from the Webster Volunteer Fire Department observed smoke coming from the rear of the structure and flames already visible in the attic space. Assistant Chief Steve Kozak highlighted the challenges faced by the initial responders, noting the intense heat in the attic and cluttered conditions within the building, which quickly escalated the situation to a multiple-alarm fire. This rapid escalation necessitated a large number of fire apparatuses and crews to combat the blaze effectively.
Adding to the complexity of the firefighting efforts were adverse weather conditions. A frozen fire hydrant in close proximity initially hampered the firefighters’ access to a primary water source. Chief Kozak explained that this obstacle required the implementation of contingency plans to secure a reliable water supply, demonstrating the preparedness of the fire department in overcoming such challenges. Despite the setback, firefighters successfully established an alternative water source and continued their efforts to contain the fire. The severity of the situation led to a fourth alarm being issued, drawing in additional resources from neighboring areas, including Wayne County, to manage the extensive fire.
Fortunately, despite the intensity of the fire and the significant damage to the Wilbert’s Car Parts building, there were no reported injuries. This is a significant relief amidst the destruction of the property. While the building is considered a total loss, there is a possibility that Wilbert’s Premium Auto Parts may be able to reopen as early as Monday, pending the findings of a fire marshal investigation. This potential for a quick reopening offers a glimmer of hope for both the business and its loyal customer base.
Dennis Prevost, a long-time customer from Greece, expressed his disappointment and concern upon hearing the news. He emphasized the value Wilbert’s Car Parts provides to the community, stating, “It’s always been a great place to go. Pick your own parts. It’s very flexible, good prices. My go-to place.” Prevost’s sentiments reflect the importance of Wilbert’s to local car owners and DIY mechanics who rely on their services for affordable and accessible auto parts. He further added, “I do plan on still being a customer afterward. I hope they’re not too affected by this, and they can move forward,” showcasing the strong customer loyalty Wilbert’s Car Parts has cultivated over time. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen challenges businesses can face, but also highlights the resilience of community businesses like Wilbert’s Car Parts and the support they receive from their patrons.
