This part-time position offers day and evening shifts, with hours ranging from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The schedule also includes every other weekend and holiday, providing a consistent yet adaptable work-life balance.

What You Will Do as a Part-Time Patient Care Technician

In this vital role, your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, encompassing both core patient care tasks and specialized duties after comprehensive training.

Core Patient Care Responsibilities:

As a Patient Care Technician, you will be expertly trained to perform a range of fundamental tasks, including:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assisting patients with bathing, feeding, transportation, toileting, ambulation, and repositioning to ensure their comfort and well-being.
  • Point of Care Testing: Conducting essential tests such as blood glucose monitoring, recording weights, vital signs, and accurately documenting intake and output (I&O).
  • Telemetry Monitoring: Applying and reapplying telemetry monitors, ensuring continuous patient monitoring.
  • Preventative Care: Implementing measures for Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HAC) and Pressure Injury (PSI) prevention, including the application of TED stockings and Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs).
  • Specimen Collection & Basic Procedures: Performing simple dressing changes, applying and removing restraints, conducting bladder scans, and collecting various specimens as needed.

Specialist Patient Care Duties:

Upon successful completion of specialized training and competency assessments, you will advance to perform specialized duties, enhancing your skill set and contribution to patient care. These specialist duties include:

  • IV Catheter and Foley Catheter Management: Expertly removing IV catheters and Foley catheters.
  • Catheter Insertion Skills: Performing IV insertions, Foley catheter insertions, and straight catheterizations with precision and care.
  • Phlebotomy Skills: Conducting phlebotomy to collect blood samples for diagnostic testing.
  • Advanced Skills (Based on Department Needs): Developing proficiency in one or more advanced skills such as basic arrhythmia interpretation, complex wound care management, performing 12-lead EKGs, and managing NG tubes (clamping and removal).

Qualifications to Join Our Team

UPMC values experience and dedication to patient care. To be considered for this Part-Time Patient Care Technician position, candidates should meet the following qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:
    • Option a) 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician – Senior title.
    • Option b) 1 year of healthcare experience and enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), or Physician Assistant (PA) program with at least one clinical rotation completed.
    • Option c) 1 year of healthcare experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
  • Certifications and Clearances:
    • CPR certification based on AHA standards (including didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire.
    • ACLS preferred.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nursing students who have completed one clinical rotation are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or Paramedics, or those currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program, are also preferred.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency is required.
