Unleash Your Miata’s Potential with Performance Car Parts: A Turbo Kit Review

As a dedicated Mazda Miata enthusiast, constantly seeking ways to enhance its performance, I recently installed a turbo kit on my 2003 NB Miata. Living in California and frequently driving my Miata to track events, finding a street-legal performance upgrade was crucial. This turbo kit proved to be the ideal solution. Having already prepped my car for track use with upgrades like a radiator, ducting, vents, and an oil cooler, this turbo kit was the perfect next step in maximizing my Miata’s capabilities with high-quality Mazda Miata Car Parts.

The installation process, while requiring dedication, was ultimately straightforward. It’s not about any single, overly complicated step, but rather the overall organization and methodical approach needed. Flyin’ Miata’s customer support was exceptional, truly going above and beyond. Any question I had, they answered promptly, often on the same day. The entire install took me approximately four full days of work to complete from start to finish.

When it comes to daily driving, the low-speed drivability is surprisingly good. Taking off from a complete stop requires a bit more attention, but this is also influenced by my aftermarket Supermiata 8 lb flywheel and sport clutch. Considering these modifications, the street manners are more than acceptable.

However, the real transformation is experienced on the track. The track day and racing drivability is simply amazing. The power increase is perfectly judged; it’s enough to make you eagerly anticipate the straights, rather than feeling underpowered. Crucially, it doesn’t diminish the essential “Miata-ness” of the car. You can still confidently apply full throttle when exiting most corners and maintain precise control, but now with a significantly more exhilarating experience.

On the dyno, my Miata produced 179hp and 160trq after the turbo install, a substantial leap from the pre-turbo 121hp and 115trq. This represents a remarkable 50% power increase – and it’s still street legal! Flyin’ Miata also offers wideband sensors and manual boost controllers, both of which I highly recommend purchasing with the kit. The Voodoo box fueling map is pre-configured, so fine-tuning the air-fuel ratio (AFR) is done by adjusting the boost level. I used my phone to record wideband data during a dyno pull, reviewed the AFR, and then adjusted the boost controller accordingly. This method made dialing in the tune considerably easier.

Beyond this tuning aspect, the kit is remarkably plug-and-play for a turbo system; it simply performs as expected. I’m still genuinely impressed every time I accelerate and feel the enhanced power. For anyone looking to significantly boost the performance of their Miata, this turbo kit, comprised of high-quality mazda miata car parts, is an outstanding upgrade.
