Upgrade Your BMW E28 with Euro Bumpers: A Parts Car Perspective

For BMW E28 enthusiasts, the European headlight and bumper conversion is a highly sought-after modification. If you’re unfamiliar with why this swap is so popular, let’s quickly recap. The US-spec bumpers on the E28 are often described as bulky and oversized, detracting from the sleek, classic 1980s BMW design. These substantial pieces of metal add unnecessary weight and visual clutter.

However, it’s worth noting that even the US bumpers can be improved aesthetically. As demonstrated by the E28 pictured above, owned and photographed by Jared Houston, tucking the US bumpers closer to the body provides a cleaner, more streamlined appearance. This “tuck” mod is a cost-free and less time-intensive alternative to a full Euro conversion. Yet, for those who appreciate the slimmer profile and cleaner lines of the European models, the Euro bumper conversion remains the ultimate upgrade.

Sourcing BMW E28 Euro Bumper Parts for Your Conversion

The primary hurdle in performing a Euro bumper conversion is acquiring the necessary parts. Similar to Euro headlights, these bumpers originate from outside North America. Unlike smaller components, bumpers are large and cumbersome to ship, making it challenging to find sellers willing to ship them internationally at a reasonable cost. Fortunately, some US-based sellers import batches of these parts, which is how I managed to source mine. While not cheap, at over $600 plus shipping for a front and rear set, it’s a significant investment when considering the typical value range of a Bmw E28 Parts Car or project car, which often falls between $2000 and $5000.

Keep in mind that these Euro bumpers are typically used parts, so pristine condition shouldn’t be expected unless you are prepared to pay a premium. My front bumper was in decent shape with some chrome wear, but the rear bumper had rusted mounting tabs and a dent. While better condition sets exist, commanding prices exceeding $1000, the rarity of these parts often necessitates seizing opportunities when they arise. Think of this parts sourcing process as part of the journey in restoring or upgrading your BMW E28 parts car.

Installing Your BMW E28 Euro Bumpers

The rear Euro bumper installation is relatively straightforward, utilizing original equipment (OE) hardware with minor adjustments. However, the front bumper presents a more complex scenario. One approach involves modifying the chassis to accommodate the Euro brackets. However, this method is time-consuming and arguably unnecessary given the availability of bolt-on solutions. Specifically designed brackets allow the Euro bumper to directly bolt onto the US support beam, simplifying the front bumper conversion significantly. These brackets can be sourced from European auto shops specializing in BMW parts, such as Guten Parts + Service.

Beyond the bumpers themselves and mounting brackets, a comprehensive Euro conversion often involves additional trim pieces, bolts, and brackets. The extent to which you pursue these supplementary parts depends on your desired level of detail and authenticity. Fortunately, BMW still maintains some stock of older Euro E28 parts, and suppliers like Bavarian Autosport carry a range of these components. Consider acquiring new rear bumper brackets, fog light surrounds, and clips for Euro turn signals and fog lights to complete the conversion properly.

Essential and Optional BMW E28 Euro Bumper Parts

At a minimum, Euro turn signals are essential for this conversion. While fog lights are technically optional, omitting them would compromise the overall aesthetic and completeness of the Euro look. As with the bumpers, these parts can be challenging to source, particularly the fog lights. Therefore, securing them promptly when available is advisable. Locating all necessary components for this conversion can take time – in my case, around four months. Persistence is key, and leveraging European BMW enthusiast forums can significantly expedite the parts acquisition process.

Before commencing the swap, take one final look at the original US bumpers. Appreciate the improvement you are about to make and congratulate yourself on undertaking this enhancement. It’s time to say goodbye to the bulk!

Begin by safely raising the front of your BMW E28 and securing it on jack stands. Removing a significant portion of the front end is necessary, making working at an elevated height considerably easier.
