Automatic OBD2 Adapter Service Shutting Down: Impact on Car Owners

Automatic, a company recognized for its innovative on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) dongle, has announced the discontinuation of its services due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This decision marks the end for a popular device that provided car owners with valuable insights into their vehicle’s performance and driving habits through an Obd2 Automatic connection. Users are advised to dispose of or recycle their adapters as the service, including the smartphone app and data access, will cease on May 28th at 12 PM PT.

In an official statement posted on their website, Automatic cited the pandemic’s adverse effects on their business model:

“Just like many other companies in the United States, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted our business. With fewer consumers purchasing and leasing vehicles and drivers on the road, we unfortunately do not see a path forward for our business. These are unprecedented times, and with so much uncertainty ahead, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the Automatic connected car product, service and platform.”

Automatic’s journey began in 2013 with the introduction of the Automatic Link, a first-generation OBD2 automatic adapter priced at $100. This device allowed users to monitor trips and fuel consumption, albeit with limited diagnostic capabilities. Later, a second-generation adapter was launched alongside an app store, expanding the functionality and ecosystem around their OBD2 offerings. However, prior to this shutdown announcement, the company had already declared an end-of-support for its earlier generation adapters, signaling potential challenges ahead.

The widespread impact of COVID-19 has led to numerous disruptions across industries, including product delays and project cancellations. While some companies have had to postpone launches or scrap projects, Automatic’s situation highlights a more severe consequence – complete shutdown. As the pandemic’s economic repercussions continue to unfold, more businesses may face similar difficult decisions.

For users who have integrated their Automatic accounts with third-party applications, continued access will be available until June 28th. Subscribers to PayTollo through Automatic will receive specific instructions from PayTollo regarding their accounts. The shutdown of this OBD2 automatic service serves as a reminder of the pandemic’s far-reaching effects on the automotive and tech industries, and the connected car market.
