Position Overview
As a Part Time Patient Care Technician – Specialist at UPMC, you will play a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care and supporting the smooth operation of our Emergency Department. Working under the direction of nurses and physicians, you will provide routine patient care, perform specialized duties after comprehensive training, and contribute to a positive and efficient healthcare environment.
This part-time position offers day and evening shifts, with hours ranging from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The schedule includes every other weekend and holidays, offering a balanced work-life integration.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities as a Part Time Patient Care Technician will encompass a wide range of essential patient care and support tasks, including:
- Fundamental Patient Care: Providing assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients.
- Point of Care Testing: Performing crucial point-of-care tests, including blood glucose monitoring, and accurately recording patient weights and vital signs.
- Fluid Management: Monitoring and documenting patient intake and output (I&O).
- Telemetry Monitoring: Applying and reapplying telemetry monitors to ensure continuous patient monitoring.
- Pressure Injury Prevention: Implementing measures for Hospital Acquired Conditions (HAC) and Pressure Injury (PSI) prevention, including the application of TED stockings and Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs).
- Specimen Collection and Basic Procedures: Completing simple dressings, applying and removing restraints, performing bladder scans, and collecting various patient specimens.
- Advanced Technical Skills: After specialized training, you will be proficient in performing IV catheter removal, Foley catheter removal, IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, straight catheterization, phlebotomy, and patient transport using “ticket to ride” protocols.
- Specialist Competencies: Achieving and maintaining competency in at least one or more advanced skills based on departmental needs, which may include basic arrhythmia recognition, complex wound care management, 12-lead EKG acquisition, and nasogastric (NG) tube clamping and removal.
- Communication and Collaboration: Demonstrating clear and effective communication with all members of the healthcare team, fostering a collaborative and respectful work environment.
- Equipment Management and Department Support: Ensuring proper functioning of equipment, reporting malfunctions promptly, and contributing to general unit activities such as answering call lights and telephones, distributing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Professional Development: Actively participating in feedback processes, identifying learning needs, and engaging in continuous professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Adherence to Policies and Procedures: Strictly adhering to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures related to patient care, safety, and documentation.
Qualifications
To be considered for this Part Time Patient Care Technician position, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience:
- Option a) Two years of general healthcare experience and meet the requirements for a Patient Care Technician – Senior title.
- Option b) One year of healthcare experience and enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), or Physician Assistant (PA) program with completion of at least one clinical rotation.
- Option c) One year of healthcare experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
- Specialist Training: Successful completion of a patient care technician specialist class.
- Basic Information System Training: Successful completion of basic information system training.
- Preferred Experience: Microcomputer experience is preferred. Nursing students with one completed clinical rotation and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or Paramedics (or current enrollment in such programs) are also preferred.
- Arrhythmia Certification: Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency is required.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- CPR Certification: CPR certification is required based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire.
- ACLS Preference: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
