These positions involve 12-hour shifts, typically two shifts per week, with options for both day (7am-7pm) and night (7pm-7am) rotations. What You’ll Do as a Part-Time Patient Care Tech
As a part-time Patient Care Tech, you will play a crucial role in providing direct patient care under the delegation of Registered Nurses (RNs). Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, contributing directly to patient comfort and recovery. Key duties include:
- Basic Nursing Skills: Monitoring vital signs, pulse oximetry, and blood glucose levels; assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs); recording intake and output; collecting specimens; applying compression stockings and SCDs; and managing drainage systems.
- Maintaining a Safe and Clean Environment: Ensuring patient rooms and work areas are tidy, safe, and free of clutter. Implementing fall risk interventions for high-risk patients, including hourly rounds and prompt response to call lights.
- Communication and Observation: Documenting all tasks in the O2 system, promptly reporting any changes in patient condition, vital signs, mental status, skin integrity, pain levels, or other concerns to the RN.
- Patient Support and Safety: Assisting patients in restraints with ROM exercises, fluids, and toileting; reorienting confused patients; and reinforcing patient and family education on safety precautions.
- Adherence to Safety Standards: Demonstrating proper hand hygiene, standard precautions, and isolation protocols.

Qualifications to Become a Part-Time Patient Care Tech
To be considered for these part-time patient care tech jobs, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days of hire.
- One of the following:
- Certified Nurse Aide/Assistant (CNA) certification.
- Medical Assistant Diploma.
- Documentation of Fundamentals of Nursing Course verifying basic skills.
- Minimum of 18 months of experience in a specialty tech position.
- Completion of the Gold Standard Intern Program/Acute Care School with University of Kansas Health System.
Knowledge Requirement:
- Applicants aged 16 and 17 are eligible for PRN (as needed) positions.
