What You’ll Do as a Patient Care Technician

As a vital member of our 8B Medical / GI Unit team, your role as a part-time Patient Care Technician will be multifaceted and impactful. You will work collaboratively with nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to our pediatric patients. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Essential Patient Care: Performing core nursing assistant duties such as assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) – bathing, feeding, transportation, toileting, ambulation, and repositioning.
  • Clinical Support: Conducting point-of-care testing (including blood glucose monitoring), recording weights and vital signs, managing intake and output (I&O), applying and reapplying telemetry monitors, and implementing measures for Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) and Pressure Injury (PSI) prevention, such as applying TED hose and SCDs.
  • Advanced Skills (Based on Department Needs): Developing proficiency in advanced skills such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping and removal (training provided and competency must be achieved).
  • Team Collaboration and Communication: Actively participating in unit activities, responding to call lights and telephones, assisting with meal tray distribution, and transporting patients. You will communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team, providing feedback to Registered Nurses (RNs) regarding patient status and reporting any changes in condition.
  • Professional Development and Initiative: Contributing to departmental improvements, supporting quality initiatives, and proactively identifying and addressing learning needs. You will be encouraged to participate in self-review and seek opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills.
  • Commitment to Safety and Policy: Adhering strictly to all patient care and hospital policies and procedures, including safety guidelines and standard precautions. Accurately documenting patient care in medical records according to established protocols.

We are looking for individuals who are dedicated, compassionate, and eager to learn. To be considered for a part-time Patient Care Technician position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One of the following experience criteria:
    • Two years of general healthcare experience and fulfillment of Patient Care Technician title requirements.
    • One year of relevant healthcare experience and active enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), or Physician Assistant (PA) program with at least one completed clinical rotation.
    • One year of relevant healthcare experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of a patient care technician senior class (or willingness to complete upon hiring).
  • Successful completion of basic information system training (or willingness to complete upon hiring).
  • CPR certification based on AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire.
  • Clearances: Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance (renewals as required).

Preferred:

  • Microcomputer experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Nursing students who have completed one clinical rotation.
  • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or Paramedics, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency.
  • ACLS certification.
