Part-Time Opportunities Available:

We are currently hiring for part-time Nursing Assistants/Patient Care Technicians to work rotating shifts. The schedule includes one 12-hour shift (either 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM) and one 8-hour shift (6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, or 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM) per week. Work in the 3 Main Surgical Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit:

As a Part-Time Patient Care Technician, you will be an integral part of our 3 Main Surgical Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit. This 38-bed unit specializes in post-operative care, particularly for patients recovering from thoracic surgery. We serve as Shadyside’s surgical stepdown unit, providing exceptional care to high-acuity patients undergoing procedures ranging from minimally invasive esophagectomies to complex lobe resections. Furthermore, our unit provides specialized care for interventional cardiac cases originating from the catheterization and electrophysiology labs, offering a diverse and challenging patient population to enhance your skills and experience.

What You Will Do as a Patient Care Technician:

In this vital part-time patient care technician role, you will provide routine, yet crucial, patient care and support services under the direction of nurses and physicians. Your responsibilities will directly impact the quality of patient care delivered within our unit. Your duties may include:

  • Assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning.
  • Monitoring and recording vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature.
  • Performing simple dressing changes as directed.
  • Conducting EKGs (electrocardiograms).
  • Performing bladder scans.
  • Collecting various patient specimens.
  • Monitoring blood glucose levels.

Comprehensive Paid Training Program:

To ensure your success, all newly hired part-time Patient Care Technicians will participate in a mandatory, paid training program. We offer two training paths based on your experience level:

  • Main Training Program (2 Weeks): For individuals without prior nursing student clinical rotations or specific transferable inpatient/hospital experience. This comprehensive program combines virtual and in-person training sessions, held weekdays during daylight hours, over a two-week period. Full attendance is mandatory to complete this program.
  • 1-Day Training Program: For those who have completed a clinical rotation in nursing school or possess relevant transferable in-patient/hospital experience. This accelerated program takes place on a Saturday, allowing experienced candidates to quickly integrate into their roles.

Key Responsibilities of a Part-Time Patient Care Technician:

  • Adhere to UPMC’s system-wide competencies and behavioral standards.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department promptly.
  • Establish and maintain effective, respectful communication with patients and colleagues.
  • Contribute to essential unit activities, including responding to patient call lights, distributing meal trays, and transporting patients as needed.
  • Actively seek and constructively utilize feedback to identify and address personal learning needs.
  • Proactively work to enhance your knowledge, skills, and overall job performance.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and maintain a strong awareness of patient safety protocols.
  • Perform core nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs, point-of-care testing, and vital sign monitoring.
  • Provide direct patient care under the guidance and direction of Registered Nurses (RNs).
  • Maintain a safe and clean patient environment at all times.
  • Distribute necessary supplies and equipment to support patient care.
  • Accurately document patient information in medical records and strictly comply with all safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications to Become a Part-Time Patient Care Technician:

  • Successful completion of the UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program OR successful completion of the UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper body mechanics and safe patient transfer techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification is preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Limited access to medications, restricted to distributing medications to licensed nurses only.

Specific Requirements:

  • Nursing Assistant: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Patient Care Technician: High school diploma or equivalent AND one of the following:
    • One year of prior healthcare experience.
    • Completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing, PT/OT/PA, or related healthcare training program.
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field.
  • Patient Care Technician – Senior: High school diploma or equivalent AND one of the following:
    • Two years of healthcare experience.
    • One year of healthcare experience PLUS completion of at least one clinical rotation (as described above).
    • One year of experience AND a Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field.
    • Annual completion of a professional contribution (details provided after hire).
    • Successful completion of the Senior training class.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire, meeting AHA standards including didactic and skills demonstration components.
  • Act 34 clearance.
