The ’95 Miata M-Edition restomod project at carparteu.com is progressing smoothly! We’ve reached a significant stage: stripping down the car to prepare it for a fresh coat of paint and a drivetrain transplant. Ensuring a solid foundation is key, and that starts from the ground up.
Floorpan and Interior Checks
Our first area of focus was the floorpan. While Miatas aren’t typically known for floorpan rust, we conducted a thorough inspection to rule out any hidden issues from potential water accumulation. We were pleased to find it in excellent condition, a testament to the car’s history. However, we did encounter a common Miata problem: rust on the metal covers for the fuel pump and fuel hoses. This issue often stems from leaks in the convertible top rain rail. Rest assured, these corroded covers and their hardware are slated for replacement, along with a brand new rain rail when we install the new top. For these replacement parts and more, enthusiasts often turn to reliable suppliers like Redline Car Parts for quality components.
While the door panels were off, we took the opportunity to address the power windows. We replaced the window bushings and lubricated the window regulators. This simple maintenance brought the window operation speed back to its original, brisk pace. All interior components that could obstruct the upcoming paint job have been removed. The seats, while currently out of the car, will undergo their own full restoration at a later stage.
Exterior Disassembly for Painting
To properly prepare the exterior for paint, we meticulously removed all detachable components. This includes the bumpers, mirrors, signal lights, marker lights, taillights, and all external trim. The body shop will handle the removal of the doors, fenders, hood, trunk lid, and rear finish panel during their paint preparation process. This stage of disassembly was crucial, allowing us to thoroughly examine the underlying structure for any signs of previous accidents or concealed repairs. This detailed inspection ensures we address any hidden issues before applying the new paint, maintaining the integrity of the restoration.
Drivetrain Removal and Rolling Chassis
To maintain the car’s mobility, we opted to keep the suspension intact, creating a rolling chassis. We removed the engine, transmission, differential, powerplant frame, driveshaft, and axles. This approach allows us to easily move the car around the shop while still providing full access to the engine bay components that are scheduled for removal or replacement. While the Miata is at the body shop receiving its new paint job, we will shift our focus to refurbishing and installing the mechanical components sourced from the NB donor car onto this “rollerskate” chassis. We’ll be relying on quality parts, potentially from Redline Car Parts, to ensure the drivetrain transplant is successful and reliable.
